New history books in May 2026

by Anthony Webb, 2 June 2026

Here's the list from last month (history books published here in the UK in hardback): only nine but a wide range of topics. A couple I am curious about are:

  • This Little World: A New History of Tudor and Stuart England, by Nandini Das. I really enjoyed (and reviewed) Nandini Das' last book, so on that evidence I expect this one to be highly readable and insightful. It presents a history of 16th and 17th century England through the broad horizons of at least some of its denizens and visitors.

  • To Rule All Under Heaven: A History of Classical China, from Confucius to the First Emperor, by Andrew Seth Meyer. The blurb states that this is the first ever comprehensive history in English of China's warring states period, which must be an exageration, but certainly I have never read one, and would like to!
